Why Sally Field Was Disappointed Playing Aunt May in The Amazing Spider-Man

Legendary actress Sally Field played the supporting character, Aunt May, in two The Amazing Spider-Man movies. Apparently though, the Academy Award-winning actress didn't like her role at all, to say the least.

Field sat down on The Howard Stern Show recently and the 69-year-old actress revealed that she only played Aunt May to fulfill the wishes of close friend and late producer Laura Ziskin, who was fighting breast cancer at the time.

Asked whether she liked the movies or not, Field said:

Not especially. It's not my kind of movie. But my friend Laura Ziskin was the producer, and we knew it would be her last film, and she was my first producing partner, and she was a spectacular human.

As the interview went on, the actress further dissed the lack of depth in the part. She told talk show guru Howard Stern:

It's really hard to find a three dimensional character in it, and you work it as much as you can, but you can't put ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag.

Aunt May has always been a supportive character in the life of Peter Parker, but Field seemed to be stating facts when she discussed the role as disappointing. She also admitted to Stern in the interview that she didn't really have to put "a great deal" of preparation into the role.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, apart from taking care of Peter, Aunt May had a job as a nurse, which had been ignored until the city had a power outage and a scene showed the character working in a hospital.

The Oscar winner's disappointed comments further explains why the character needed a reboot movie. Thankfully this time, Sony has partnered up with Marvel. Hopefully, the next Spider-Man movie won't disappoint fans as well as the new Aunt May.

The upcoming Spider-Man reboot will hit theaters in 2017. It's set to star Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Zendaya in an unknown role.

Do you think Sally Field would dare see the film?
