Westworld Co-Creator Insists They Have a Planned Ending and are Not Just Making Things Up as They Go

The first season of Westworld was pretty complicated, and the second season wasn't a cake walk of a story either. At some point, audience members were already questioning how much of the series was planned ahead, and co-creator Lisa Joy confirms that they've already planned the ending way back since the first season.

In an interview with Stuff (via /Film), Joy explains:

"We have an ending in mind; we've had it from the pilot. It's very emotional, I think. I can't tell you exactly when that ending will come…but I think for every season what we try to do is tell a chapter of the story that gives you closure and then opens a door to a new chapter…The overarching question of the series is, what will become of this new lifeform? So I feel it would be irresponsible to not have an end goal in mind."

Other shows have ended up "making things as they go along" before; just ask the developers of Lost—it never turns out well. It's good to know that with Westworld, Joy and her co-showrunner Jonathan Nolan already have an idea on how the series will end the arcs of the characters.

As of now, Westworld 3 has already been greenlit by HBO, but we have yet to get a release date. With the high-end production value of the series, we should expect another year to be skipped, much like with this season as well.

Though the wait may be tiring, it's pretty much worth it, getting a series with so much attention to detail people can analyze something from every frame.

No release date has been set for Westworld 3.
