Watch: How Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Recreated Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher

Ever since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released in theaters, fans have been fascinated with how the film managed to revive two actors thanks to the magic of visual effects technology.

The film features Peter Cushing, who passed away in 1994, as the Imperial Grand Moff Tarkin, and Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher, who was still alive during the film's creation, looking as she did at 19 during the filming of 1977's Star Wars.

Nightline reporter Clayton Sandell talked to John Knoll, executive producer of Rogue One and chief creative officer for Industrial Light & Magic, the company who recreated the characters with the hybrid of live actors, performance capture technology, and digital animation. Sandell also spoke with Paul Giacoppo, digital character model supervisor, and they both discussed the artistry and ethics of resurrecting both actors on screen.
