Warner Bros. Working On The Joker Origin Movie Outside Of The DCEU

Warner Bros. might be busy building its burgeoning DC Extended Universe however it seems like the studio is interested in developing an origin story for The Joker outside of the superhero franchise.

According to a report by Deadline, Warner Bros. is planning to work on The Joker, an origin movie for The Dark Knight's greatest enemy in a banner outside the DCEU.

The studio is already in the early stages of development for the Batman Universe spinoff movie with The Hangover's Todd Phillips to direct the film and co-write a script with 8 Mile screenwriter, Scott Silver. Phillips is also set to produce the film with Martin Scorsese.

Warner Bros. has not revealed what kind of banner it has planned for The Joker just yet, seeing as it plans to set the film outside of the DCEU, however the report reveals that the studio intends to create what the publication describes as a "a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-'80s Gotham City that isn't meant to feel like a DC movie."

This is probably the reason why Scorcese was brought in to produce the project – the filmmaker is known for gritty and grounded films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and The Departed.

Right now there's no word on whether Jared Leto will be brought in to play the role of the Joker, however seeing as WB plans to set the film outside of the DCEU, it's rather unlikely he'll be brought into the project.
