Warner Bros. Explains The Beginning of the DC Expanded Universe

Warner Bros. is setting the record straight. Though many believed that the DC Expanded Universe had kicked off with the divisive Batman vs. Superman back in 2016, it turns out that the cinematic universe officially began when Zack Snyder released the film's prequel, the DC Superman reboot, Man of Steel.

Speaking with Comicbook, DC Films producer Charles Roven revealed how Warner Bros. had planning the DC Expanded Universe from the moment they started Man of Steel.

"When we started with Man of Steel, we knew that we were going to expand the universe," Roven explained during the interview. "From the moment that we started with Man of Steel, we knew that once we opened up the Superman ... You can't do Superman without talking about aliens existing in our universe. We knew that we were going to have to really consider what the world building would be beyond the unique film. Then, as soon as Warner Brothers announced that slate, we really got intensive about it."

"But the thing is, each unique film in the DC pantheon is going to be unique because the directors are different except for Zack directing Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the two Justice League movies. Each one of those directors, whether it be David Ayer or Patty Jenkins or James Wan, they are bringing their sensibilities and a different production designer and different costume designer, et cetera. That world building will still be of the same DC Justice League universe, but have its own unique point of view."

Roven also revealed how the studio had tried to plan the "broad strokes" of the DCEU, intending to do a reverse MCU by building up the Justice League and the exploring the team members separately. Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman was the only character the studio had planned to get a solo film before Justice League in an attempt to show her value as "part of the trinity of DC Comics." Though the DCEU has had its hiccups, stumbling on Batman vs. Superman and tripping up on Suicide Squad, we still sincerely hope that Warner Bros. will be able to brush itself up and do well with the films it has lined for the year.

Wonder Woman is scheduled to release on June 2, 2017 while Justice League comes out a little later on November 17, 2017.
