Veteran Comic Artist Comments On Where The Spider-Man: Homecoming Poster Went Wrong

It's no mystery that a lot of people aren't pleased with the new Spider-Man: Homecoming poster. Aside from trying to sell Iron Man too much, the poster is just so crowded and terribly edited. Veteran comic and poster artist Tommy Lee Edwards thinks he can tell just exactly where the poster fell short.

In an interview with The Verge, Edwards says:

"In a way, that Spider-Man poster almost looks like, ‘Here's a bunch of references I got from the movie. Let's put it all together and see how it looks,'… From there, you might be inspired to do a real poster. Instead, they just stopped at that point. It just looks like it's not even finished."

Edwards has actually worked on a few movie posters himself, and has contributed for franchises like Harry Potter and Star Wars. On his philosophy when it comes to making cinematic posters, Edwards had this to say:

"A movie is something that so many people work so hard on for so long… I feel like the poster should honor that time and love that went into this piece of art. If a poster can show what that movie is about, rather than a big actor's head, I think that's a really important thing. So the genre, the tone, the kind of story. Not every poster has to be a montage of elements, but when you do those kinds of posters, they can be done really, really well."

Though the Spider-Man: Homecoming poster does look a tad too crowded and unfinished, Marvel and Sony sure have enough time to get people's attention somewhere else. I don't know who exactly is to blame in this situation, but I feel like the marketing team for the movie has dropped the ball several times when trying to promote the film.

Besides the bad poster, the second trailer for the movie had basically given away the entire plot of the film — that's not a mistake you want to make when trying to get people excited for one of the biggest superheroes of all time.

Spider-Man: Homecoming comes out July 7.
