Venom Being Outside Of the MCU Will Make Sense… But You Won’t Like The Reason Why

It's no secret that a lot of fans are angry at Sony for developing a Venom standalone film outside of the MCU. Why keep building your own universe if you already have access to the more developed (and successful) Marvel Studios world? Apparently, Sony has a very good reason for keeping the characters to themselves — but you really won't like it.

As it turns out, Tom Holland's Spider-Man will be leaving the MCU after the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. During CinemaCon, Spider-Man: Homecoming producer Amy Pascal said:

"One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don't have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often. In fact, it may never happen again--after we do the sequel."

That's why Sony was so confident in moving forward with the Venom spin-off. By the time Spider-Man returns to Sony, they wouldn't have to worry about connecting anything to the MCU afterwards because Spider-Man won't be part of the MCU anymore.

Surely this bodes some bad news for fans, since we're once again looking at three separate Marvel Universes — one from Marvel Studios, another from Fox, and this last one from Sony; and just when we thought Marvel had Spider-Man for good.

If it's any consolation, maybe the movies can exist just like the Marvel TV Universe; they're their own separate thing, but they have small nods to the bigger picture. Hopefully that doesn't breach any contracts.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set for a release on July 7.
