Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets Will Have 600 More Visual Effects Shots Than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Based on what we've seen in the trailers and featurettes for Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets, it's clear that the film used a lot of visual effects shots to bring its otherworldly setting to life, and its world looks surreal. According to THR, the film will have a total of 2,355 visual effects shots, which is 600 more than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's amount. Only a handful of films could boast that amount.

Cara Delevigne, who plays Laureline in the film, shared some details about shooting the film:

"We were filming basically every day in front of a bluescreen. Out of six months, only two weeks were under normal circumstances."

Considering the amount of alien creatures, ships, and stunning worlds, it's not that surprising that they heavily used the blue screen for this film. I just hope that the heavy amount of CG won't be such a pain to watch. I love what I've seen so far though, so high hopes for this one.

Synopsis:

In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

The film also stars Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu, and Rutger Hauer.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hits theaters on July 21, 2017. Watch the clip here to get a taste of the visual effects shots in the film.
