Upcoming Video Game Spellbound Mixes Stardew Valley With Harry Potter

Harry Potter fans have another video game to look forward to and it's not coming from Warner Bros. or Portkey Games. Instead, it's coming from Chucklefish, the creators of Stardew Valley, who have announced their new magic-based title that takes inspiration from J.K. Rowling's world and much more; Spellbound.

Revealed during an interview with Redbull, Spellbound has been described as a wizard-school sim. The concept immediately has universal appeal since everyone has always wanted to be in a magic school, especially Harry Potter fans.

Despite the obvious similarities, there are a number of differences that distances Spellbound from the world of Rowling. The creators are hoping to have a more grounded and practical magic system for the game, which will likely lead to Stardew Valley-like quests for players to gather ingredients.

"Spellbound is our exploration of that premise, but the magical world we're creating is very unlike Hogwarts. Magic in this world is very practical, taking inspiration from Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching series, Garth Nix's Old Kingdom Series, Studio Ghibli animations, and even the cartoon show Steven Universe at times."

It's not just magic that players will have to master but character relationships as well. There is also more than one magic school in the game, which will help players master various magic spells. This should add some variety to the title and should keep it infinitely replayable, ala Stardew Valley.

No release date for Spellbound has been released. The creators are aiming for a PC release but have noted that it will also likely come out on consoles, noting how successful Stardew Valley was on the Nintendo Switch.
