[UPDATE] According to Screen Rant, McG is apparently NOT directing the movie, but the script will be penned by none other than David S. Goyer (Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel)

Here's the original article:

The Hollywood reboot train trudges on, and the next franchise in line for a gritty reboot is the 80s cult classic He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Sony is apparently moving forward with the film, and the movie has just gotten its release date.

And the release date is: December 18, 2019.

So far, there hasn't been any mention of who is involved with the project but there have been rumors that McG (Terminator: Salvation, Charlie's Angels) had been attached to direct. GI Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu was also attached at some point, and Pirates of the Caribbean writer Terry Rossio was said to be in charge of the script.

This project has actually been in development hell for quite the while, so Sony must be pretty confident with what they have now to announce a release date. It's only a matter of time before we get the name of the director or the cast list.

Here's the synopsis of the cartoon:

The most powerful man in the universe, He-Man, goes against the evil forces of Skeletor to save the planet Eternia and to protect the secrets of Castle Grayskull.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe comes out on Dec. 18, 2019.
