Todd McFarlane On The Larger Role That Jamie Foxx Is Playing In Spawn

Last week, word came out that Todd McFarlane was finally able to nab Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Fox for his Spawn reboot movie. However, it seems like the Spawn comic book creator didn't just get an actor – according to McFarlane Foxx is going to be a lot of help to him when working on the film.

Speaking in an interview with ComicBook.com, McFarlane decided to open up about the extent of Fox's role in the Spawn movie. According to the director, Foxx would be doing more than just act in his Spawn reboot.

"I'd be a fool as a first time director not to listen to the pros in the start," McFarlane told the publication. "Why would I go, "No, no, no, no, no. I know better than you." I've already had those conversations with him."

McFarlane plans on learning as much as he can from Foxx from pre-production to the actual shoot. After all, this is the very first time that the comic book creator's worked on film.

"He's got a lot of thoughts on what he wants to do and how to do it," the new director said. "He's also very kind to go, 'At the end of the day, Todd, it's still your movie.' It's like I'm gonna be picking his brain as much as possible, and whoever else I get on the set. Not only just the actors, but also the editors and my cinematographer and everybody. Look, I'm gonna be arguably the most naïve, dumb guy on the set every day. So, as somebody who's been a CEO for decades now, the way to sort of make things work is just surround yourself with good people and give them ownership and give them input into the project. I mean, somebody, at the end of the day, has to make the final call. That's my position."

Of course, McFarlane knows what kind of elements he wants to see in his film. But to see the new director talk about taking as many notes as he can is pretty reassuring. It's always great to hear someone open to learning from others.

For those who aren't familiar with the Spawn, the antihero is a character who is first introduced in the comics as Al Simmons, a member of a CIA black ops team. Al is betrayed twice – once by his team who murders him and sets his corpse on fire, and then twice when he is betrayed in Hell.

There, Simmons is offered the chance to become a Hellspawn warrior so that he could see his wife again. However, when he returns to the human world, Simmons finds that five years have passed and that he had been transformed into Spawn, a demonic creature with very little memory of his past life. Spawn also discovers that his wife had moved on and married his best friend. Angrier than ever, Spawn goes on to kill off the "scum of the city in good and evil battles that encompass earth, heaven, and hell."

The Spawn movie doesn't have a release date just yet, but we'll let everyone know as soon as they get word.
