Zazie Beetz Opens Up About Key Scene In Joker

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Joker.

Joker premiered last weekend, and despite the controversy surrounding the gritty character study of Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime, the movie has been going strong at the box office. Now, thanks to a recent interview with Joker star Zazie Beetz, fans get to learn more about a pivotal moment in the movie.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Beetz decided to open up about the process of shooting Joker. During her interview with the entertainment news outlet, the actress decided to detail an important scene between Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck, and her character, Sophie Dumond.

The first half of Joker established that Arthur and Sophie, neighbors in a ramshackle apartment building in Gotham, had developed a romantic relationship. After having a bad day, Arthur heads right over to Sophie's apartment right after she puts her young daughter to bed. But when Sophie realizes that Arthur is in her apartment, she panics, letting the audience realize that she didn't really know who the character was. They had never been in a relationship – the audience is made to realize that Arthur's time with Sophie had been nothing but a figment of his imagination.

This pivotal scene was something that wasn't difficult to film.

"I can't say that it was more than usual," Beetz explained. "It was maybe the standard five takes per shot, I guess. We had a few shots and a few angles. Obviously, we had some camera angles and shots that didn't make it into the movie. I'd say we ended up doing it 15 times with all the angles involved."

The realization that Arthur's relationship with Sophie came as a bit of a surprise to fans – everyone had been expecting the two to actually form a relationship in the movie and for Arthur to do something atrocious to the character. Turns out, it was all in Arthur's head.

What do you think of that scene with Sophie? Do you want to see her in a potential Joker sequel? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Joker is currently screening in cinemas.
