X-Men: Dark Phoenix Was Supposed To Be A Two-Part Movie

There's been a lot of disappointment over X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Marvel fans had a lot of high hopes over the movie knowing that the film marked the end of Fox's X-Men film franchise, however, the film instantly become one of the worst reviewed X-Men movies of the entire mutant film franchise.

Now, a new report from Deadline reveals that there might be a major reason behind Dark Phoenix's failings. According to the news entertainment outlet, the film was supposed to be spread out over two different instalments, much like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and much like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Writer and director Simon Kinberg originally set up the Dark Phoenix as a two-parter until late in pre-preproduction with 21st Century Fox when the studio informed the filmmaker that he would only get one movie to tell his story – possibly because of the incoming merger with Disney.

If this story is true, we can only wonder why Kinberg wasn't given enough time to overhaul the script for the film. Rushing an entire two-parter into one film makes for very bad cinema and would explain why fans and critics have been bashing the film, calling it an underwhelming conclusion to the X-Men franchise.

Right now, Dark Phoenix has a disappointing 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes and the film is performing just as poorly at the box office, grossing only $32 million during its opening weekend. Industry experts say that the film could end up losing between $100 to $120 million once it finishes its run.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is currently screening in cinemas.
