Why The Original Obi-Wan Kenobi Actor Wouldn’t Want To Return To Star Wars

Star Wars fans may be eager to see Ewan McGregor reprise his role as everyone's favorite Jedi Knight in Lucasfilm's upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi live-action series, however, the project may have never come to light had the studio opted for Alec Guinness to take on the role.

While Guinness is no longer around to witness the growth of the Star Wars franchise under Disney, Comic Book Resources tries to speculate whether or not the Star Wars legend would ever reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi if he were alive today.

Guinness has had a rather contentious relationship with the Star Wars film franchise. Despite the love that Star Wars fans had for old uncle Ben, the actor didn't feel the same way for the galaxy far, far away. Guinness didn't appreciate that his career in theater and film had been overlooked because of his role in the Star Wars original trilogy. In Guinness' book, A Positively Final Appearance, the actor called Star Wars a "world of secondhand, childish banalities."

Given his negative perception of the franchise, it's hard to believe that Guiness would ever want to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi for Disney.

Of course, there's also the chance that Disney could have convinced Guiness to reconsider the series – perhaps the studio could sway the actor with a well-written script for the series. A large payday would have probably helped as well.

Unfortunately, we'll never really know whether Guinness would be open to playing old uncle Ben again. The actor passed away in 2000 due to liver cancer.

Obi-Wan Kenobi has yet to receive a release date but we'll update fans as soon as we get word.
