Warner Brothers Has Begun Testing For The Lead Role Of Birds Of Prey

Earlier today, word came out that Warner Brothers had already begun turning the gears for the production of Birds of Prey, giving the project a Pulp Fiction-based working title and then setting a start date for the production of the movie.

Now, according to a new report by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has begun testing actresses for the lead roles in the all-female superhero team-up movie with Marry Elizabeth Winstead in the running for Huntress and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in the running for Birds of Prey's Black Canary.

For those who aren't familiar with Mbatha-Raw, the actress headlined in Netflix science fiction horror movie, The Cloverfield Paradox.

June Smollet-Bell from the hit WGN series Underground ( also the lead star of the upcoming HBO series Lovecraft County) is also in the mix for Warner Brothers selection of actresses with the potential to play Black Canary, a superheroine known for her sense-shattering scream and for her proficiency in the martial arts expertise. Hidden Figures actress Janelle Monae is also being considered for Black Canary in the movie, however, the report doesn't specify whether or not she already tested for the part.

Warner Brothers has also been beginning testing actress for Huntress, a vigilante focused on the Gotham underworld after the murder of her mafia family. The Leftovers star Margaret Qualley and 10 Cloverfield Lane's Mary Elizabeth Winstead have both been tested and read for the role.

Meanwhile, The Purge: Anarchy's Justina Machado and Vida star Roberta Colindrez have already been tested for the role of Renee Montoya. The character might not be that familiar to most, however, comic book readers know Montoya as an openly lesbian detective in Gotham who became the vigilante the Question.

Birds of Prey is set for production January 2019. The film doesn't have a release date yet, but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
