The Rise of Skywalker’s Score Drops, Turning It to Lowest-Rated Entry in Star Wars Franchise

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have been one of the most highly anticipated films of 2019, however, the third and final film in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy has become one of the most divisive films online.

The Rise of Skywalker didn't really impress that many critics. Sure, there might have been some that enjoyed Episode IX, however, when the movie released, The Rise of Skywalker earned a low 59% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now on its fourth week in cinemas, The Rise of Skywalker's poor 59% score has gotten even lower, dropping down to 52% on the popular review aggregate site. This is shocking news. Episode IX's new 52% score now makes the movie the most poorly-received movie in the entire Star Wars franchise, beating Star Wars: The Phantom Menace which currently holds a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to The Rise of Skywalker's critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, the film "suffers from a frustrating lack of imagination" though it does conclude "this beloved saga with fan-focused devotion." Sure, Episode IX might have tried to cater to fans after the fanbase's reception of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, however, most critics found the film's fan service to be an excessive hindrance to actual story telling.

It's such a shame that the film had to do so poorly. There was a whole lot riding on The Rise of Skywalker. Not only was the film supposed to conclude Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, it was supposed to close the curtain on the entire Skywalker saga.
