The Rise of Skywalker has Officially Become Second Most Divisive Star Wars Movie

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have been enjoying some pretty good numbers at the global and domestic box office, but the third and final entry in Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy has been suffering from mixed to negative reviews from critics. Right now, Episode IX has a troubling 55 percent rotten critic score on Rotten Tomatoes – a number that shows startling difference from the movie's 86 percent fresh audience score on the very same review aggregation website.

The Rise of Skywalker has become a divisive film, second only to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Forbes just recently measured the difference in the critic scores and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes for every Star Wars movie in the franchise, and the findings reveal that The Rise of Skywalker has one of the biggest gaps between scores.

Here's the full list and the gap percentage (audience score minus critic score):

Rise of Skywalker – 55% critics V. 86% audience (+31% gap)

Return of the Jedi – 82% critics V. 94% audience (+12% gap)

The Empire Strikes Back – 93% critics V. 96% audience (+3% gap)

A New Hope – 93% critics V. 96% audience (+3% gap)

The Force Awakens – 93% critics V. 86% audience (-7% gap)

Solo – 70% critics V. 63% audience (-7% gap)

Attack of the Clones – 65% critics V. 56% audience (-9% gap)

Revenge of the Sith – 80% critics V. 66% audience (-14% gap)

The Last Jedi – 91% critics V. 43% audience (-48% gap)

Why is The Rise of Skywalker suffering from a major gap between scores? According to the critic consensus for the film on Rotten Tomatoes, Episode IX suffers from a lack of imagination, though it concludes the Skywalker saga with fan-focused devotion. However, it is this fan-focused devotion that's drawn fans to the film. Though there are those who don't seem to enjoy the movie as much, there are also quite a number of fans who love all of the endless twists and turns in The Rise of Skywalker.
