Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have been one of the most highly anticipated films of 2019, however, Episode IX became one of the most divisive entries in the Star Wars franchise, failing to give the Skywalker saga the culmination that it deserved.
While there were fanboys that enjoyed how the film, many others were disappointed by the choices that J.J. Abrams made in The Rise of Skywalker. That includes Star Wars: The Clone Wars voice actor Sam Witwer. The voice behind The Clone Wars' Darth Maul spoke with candor during a Twitch Livestream (via Cinema Blend), openly sharing his thoughts on the third and final installment in Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Though Witwer respects the opinions of those who enjoyed the film, the Star Wars actor didn't find the catharsis that he wanted in The Rise of Skywalker.
"It's um... look, if you like it, awesome. It's not as meaningful to me because I can't really reconcile that mythology with George's," Witwer declared, "But that's just my opinion, you know? My personal take is I think a Star Wars where the moral of the story is 'throw down your weapon, don't hurt your family, love, or fear.' I think that's superior than a Star Wars where you win by melting the bad guy's face off. That's just my thing... I don't know that you can do a better ending than Return of the Jedi."
Witwer sure doesn't hold back. This isn't the first time that the actor's given the sequel trilogy a negative review though. During a recent discussion of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Witwer couldn't help but criticize Rian Johnson, saying that the director didn't do "his homework." The voice actor's always been an active Star Wars fan – he even broke down Solo: A Star Wars Story to present the film's "true meaning."
