The Oscars Is Adding A New Popular Film Category For Blockbuster Movies
It looks like the Academy Awards are making a few changes to their format, opening doors for more widely popular film genres like the comic book movie to see recognition at the Oscars.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the board of governors of the Academy has just approved several changes for next year’s award ceremony, introducing a new category called the Outstanding Achievement in Popular film.
Though the requirements for the Award category haven’t been detailed yet, Academy President John Bailey and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson made the announcement of the Outstanding Achievement in Popular film official by sending out a letter to the members of the organization. These changes have been made because of the show’s low ratings and because of “concerns of those who find the show too long and boring.”
According to both Bailey and Hudson, the board has started committing to “producing an entertaining show in three hours,” with the popular film award bringing in more interest to the event by giving room to big blockbuster films like Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Black Panther, Mission Impossible: Fallout, and future Star Wars films like Star Wars: Episode IX.
The new award category is just one of the ways the Academy is trying to bring up its ratings. Aside from the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film award, the organization is also looking to tighten its program, planning to present select categories live during commercial breaks. The winning moments will then be edited and aired later during the Oscar broadcast.
