The Invisible Man Director on Unseen Movies Like Justice League’s Synder Cut

The Invisible Man is going to make its big premiere this week, and while the film is basically a horror movie about an invisible man based on H.G. Well's science fiction novel of the same name, director Leia Whannell would rather talk about other invisible things like the invisible director's cut of Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Speaking in an interview with Cinema Blend on the entertainment news outlet's podcast, the filmmaker gives his take on invisible movies and the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement. The director feels for Snyder, saying that he views the whole affair as a terrible thing where there's an unseen cut of the movie. Whannell isn't a fan of the idea that viewers get to miss out on the version that directors like Snyder wanted everyone to see.

"To me, I never wanna have another cut sitting somewhere that competes with the original cut… I guess what I'm saying is, whatever circumstances created that cut, whatever horrible circumstances are totally understandable. For me personally, I would always view it as a terrible thing that there was an unseen cut of the film," the filmmaker explained, "Over the years, you'll see this thing where it's like, ‘James Cameron rereleases the director's cut of Aliens.' And then he'll introduce it. When you watch it, he comes on the screen and he says, ‘This is the way I always intended people to watch Aliens.' And my first thought is, ‘That's nuts!' Don't have one definitive version of the movie. I hate this idea that we missed out on the version he wanted us to see."

Whannell seems to have a lot of sympathy for his peers, directors like Snyder who have to deal with the public knowing that a version of their movie exists and yet can't be shared because of issues with the studio and with the production.

Honestly, it's hard not to feel the same way for the Snyder Cut. DC fans were looking forward to Justice League and it's terrible that the movie had to end up the way it did. We were hoping for more of Snyder's ideas in the film. Instead, we got Joss Whedon's hypersexualization of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and jokes that just didn't really fit the mood of the movie.
