Star Wars’ Yoda Says That Filmmakers Aren’t Around Just To Fulfill Fan Expectations

Star Wars: The Last Jedi continuous to be a topic of dissent among Star Wars fans. While some loved the film's commentary on the Star Wars franchise and the way the entry added new elements to the Skywalker saga, traditional fans weren't so keen about how The Last Jedi tried to subvert fan expectations. Nor were they so eager to see their hero, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), turned into a jaded old hermit.

Despite the controversy surrounding The Last Jedi, legendary puppeteer Frank Oz continues to stand by Rian Johnson's Star Wars entry. The puppeteer and voice behind Yoda spoke an SWSX event at the Austin Convention Center about his likes and dislikes (via Indie Wire), and during his conversation with the publication Oz couldn't help but ring out support for the second Star Wars sequel trilogy installment.

Addressing fan's many complaints about The Last Jedi, Oz declared that filmmakers weren't making movies just to fulfill fan expectations.

"I love the movie...It's about expectations. The movie didn't fill their expectations. But as filmmakers, we're not here to fulfill people's expectations."

Oz's sentiments echo those of Rian Johnson. Though this might irritate fans, Yoda does have a point. Filmmakers don't make films just to pander to the fanbase. Sure they might make little nods here and there, but ultimately a filmmaker's goal is to tell a good story.

For many, The Last Jedi succeeds. Not only do polls held during the film's release show that many other viewers actually enjoyed the film, but The Last Jedi also won the hearts of critics. It also did pretty well at the box office too.
