Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Might End Up With Lesser Box Office Numbers Than Joker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have been one of the most highly anticipated films of 2019, however, the film became one of the most divisive films in the franchise, failing to achieve the same level of commercial and critical success as its predecessors.

Now, The Rise of Skywalker's theatrical release is coming to an end, and it looks like the third and final entry in Disney's sequel trilogy may end its run with a box office haul below Joker.

Analyzing the box office numbers for The Rise of Skywalker, Cinema Blend says that the film may end up earning less than the Joker by the end of its theatrical release. Losing 434 screens in the US this weekend, Episode IX saw a 61.8% drop in box revenue with its $531,000 haul.

Right now, The Rise of Skywalker has a $1.07 billion worldwide gross. That's just a little below what Joker has with the $1.073 billion that it earned during its theatrical release. Episode IX could push past Joker's numbers, but that seems rather unlikely.

Episode IX is nearing the end of its theatrical release and right now, it's losing a whole lot of steam.

It's such a shame how The Rise of Skywalker ended up being the lowest-grossing entry in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy. The film has been heavily criticized for its excessive use of fan service, attempting to quell the backlash over Star Wars: The Last Jedi instead of focusing on delivering a substantive story.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker is making its way to Digital HD on March 17, 2020. The film is set to release on DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4K Ultra HD on March 31, 2020.
