Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Confirms That Leia Is Not A Jedi

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have shown Leia (Carrie Fisher) demonstrating her ability to manipulate the Force by having the Resistance General move through the vacuum of space after an attack by the First Order, however that doesn't mean that the Princess is a Jedi.

Speaking with fans at a recent question and answer session with The Last Jedi's cast after a screening at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (via Comic Book), writer/director Rian Johnson explains that though Leia has Force abilities, the Resistance General is in no way a Jedi.

"No, she's not a Jedi," the director confirms after Daisy Ridley reveals how she was left confused by Leia's ability to use the Force.

"Because I wasn't so knowledgeable of the Star Wars thing, I still have questions about what it all means," Ridley openly admitted in front of Star Wars fans. "Like when people talk about Jedi and stuff like that I remember having a conversation with one of our executive producers on VII, Michelle, and I said, ‘But surely Leia's a Jedi, because she's Force sensitive and she's challenged.' She's not challenged in the same ways as Luke, but like she's doing stuff for the good and everything like that. I still don't quite have my answer, like is she a Jedi? I don't know."

Though some would criticize Ridley for her lack of Star Wars knowledge, fans ought to remember that the British actress is new to the franchise and that it's easy to confuse Leia's Force abilities for being a Jedi. People all make mistakes.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently screening in cinemas.
