Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Editor Says Leia is 'Shockingly Successful' Without CGI

It's been a while since Carrie Fisher passed away, and now, Star Wars fans are wondering just how well J.J. Abrams has been able to use the actress' extra footage in Star Wars: The Force Awakens to complete General Organa's narrative arc in his new movie, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Fans don't have to worry that much though, because the movie's editor Maryann Brandon thinks that the use of Leia's deleted footage in The Rise of Skywalker was nothing short of a success.

Speaking in an interview with CNET to talk about the latest entry in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, Brandon addresses the concerns that fans have over Leia's role in the film. Just like Lucasfilm promised, Episode IX refrained from using CG digital effects to recreate Carrie's likenesss for the film. Instead, Abrams based General Organa's narrative on the unused footage taken from The Force Awakens.

According to Brandon, Abrams and his team were careful to make sure that they were true to Leia's story.

"We were very careful to be respectful and absolutely true to her," says Brandon. "She's beautiful in the film. It's shockingly successful."

That's pretty good news. Fans would be devastated if the scenes that Abrams used didn't really fit the narrative that the director was trying to create for Leia.

Fisher passed away in December 2016 before she could complete her work for The Rise of Skywalker. Fans were adamant that Lucasfilm respect Fisher before thinking of using her likeness to recreate Leia using CGI in Episode IX. Lucasfilm kept true to its promise, and now, we have a movie where Leia returns to the big screen using deleted footage.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
