Star Wars’ Rian Johnson Says the Fun of the Franchise is Arguing About It

It looks like Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson doesn't mind a little Star Wars debate here and there.

Attending a WIRED question and answer session last weekend, Johnson decided to entertain fans' questions about the galaxy far, far away while promoting his new movie, Knives Out. As expected, some couldn't help but discuss the director's divisive but critically successful Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi. One audience member decided to ask Johnson about the backlash against the film and his thoughts on the fanbase's criticism against the diversity in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Though the director admits that he didn't really expect everyone to enjoy his take on Star Wars, Johnson believes that the passionate debates by the fans are one of the main reasons why the franchise keeps its cultural differences. According to Johnson, debates are what makes Star Wars so fun.

"People care deeply about Star Wars, and every single person has a slightly different version of what they think Star Wars is. And so much of the fun of it is arguing about it," the director told the audience.

While Johnson definitely has a point, there are some Star Wars fans who don't know how to control themselves and they go as far as to make personal attacks against the film's cast and crew. Not only has Johnson been the center of some of these attacks, but so have some of The Last Jedi's stars. Rose Tico actress Kelly Marie Tran was severely bullied by the film's haters that she even quit social media.

Sometimes the fanbase's passion can be turned into hatred. We hope that these fans can learn how to disagree civilly.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
