Star Wars Director Rian Johnson Says Social Media is Still 'Fun' Despite All the Trolls

The Star Wars fans might be a passionate bunch, but there are some members of the fanbase that cross boundaries by attacking the cast and crew of the franchise whenever they don't really enjoy the narratives or characters set in the films.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi actress Kelly Marie Tran has experienced these attacks first-hand, choosing to leave social media after the film's haters would go after her for her character, Rose Tico. The sequel trilogy's lead star, Daisy Ridley, has also lessened her time on social media.

Despite all of the bullying and all of the attacks, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson continues to use social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram to promote his films and of course, to have a good time.

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian to help promote his new movie, Knives Out, the Star Wars director was asked how he dealt with negativity on social media.

Though Johnson admits that he's had to deal with a lot of trolling, the filmmaker says that he's still having a lot of fun on social media.

"Anyone who's online is going to encounter some degree of trolling. Now, I have had. Slightly more than most people. Though people would be surprised if they had my timeline, to see how little of it I now have to deal with," Johnson explained in his discussion with the news outlet.

The director understands that despite all the noise, The Last Jedi bullies are only a few in number.

"It's just the same assholes doing it over and over," the filmmaker elaborates, "I've blocked, like, 150 people, so my mentions aren't so bad anymore. I'm no martyr; if I wasn't having a good time, I wouldn't be on Twitter. Once it stops being fun, I'll log off like a shot."

Johnson sure has social media handled. We can't wait to see the director return to helm his Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
