Star Wars President Kathleen Kennedy Explains Why Franchise Doesn’t Follow Marvel’s Formula

Disney's Star Wars films may have been commercial and critical successes for the Mickey Mouse House, however, detractors would like to call Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy one of the worst set of films in the franchise. These detractors have many explanations why the sequel trilogy fails. Some blame directors like Rian Johnson. Some blame Kathleen Kennedy. Some blame Lucasfilm for failing to follow Marvel.

Earlier this week, Vanity Fair had a major spread helping promote Lucasfilm's next sequel trilogy installment, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Taking the opportunity to help address fans' concerns over the trilogy, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy replies to the argument that the Star Wars franchise fails because it fails to follow Marvel's formula.

"I think there is a larger expectation that Disney has. On the other hand, though, I think that Disney is very respectful of what this is, and right from the beginning we talked about the fragility of this form of storytelling," Kennedy explained in her interview with the publication, "Because it's something that means so much to fans that you can't turn this into some kind of factory approach. You can't even do what Marvel does, necessarily, where you pick characters and build new franchises around those characters. This needs to evolve differently."

This response might not do so well with more traditional Star Wars fans. Die-hard Star Wars fanboys hold the franchise close to their chest and barely want any sort of change in the films they see. However, Lucasfilm has been itching to head towards a new direction. Star Wars: The Last Jedi was one of those films that tried something new, however, the film also naturally had its detractors who were against the film's subversion of fan expectation.

Will Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker continue this pattern of breaking tradition? Let's wait and see.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
