Star Wars Prequel Series Nabs Rogue One Writer Tony Gilroy

It looks like Lucasfilm's Rogue One spinoff for Disney+ is coming into shape.

According to a new post by The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm just managed to nab Rogue One: A Star Wars Story writer Tony Gilroy for its upcoming live-action Star Wars series. The filmmaker who oversaw the reshoots of Lucasfilm's very first Star Wars spinoff movie is joining the new project to write the pilot episode's script as well as direct various episodes of the new series.

For those who haven't really been following that much news about Lucasfilm's offerings on Disney's upcoming streaming platform, the Rogue One spinoff series is going to put its focus on Diego Luna's Captain Cassian Andor and his missions together with Alan Tudyk's very witty droid, K-2SO.

Aside from Gilroy joining the project, there aren't that many details about the series just yet. Right now Lucasfilm is putting its focus on Star Wars: The Mandalorian, a brand new series being developed by Iron Man director Jon Favreau. Set five years after Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi, the series follows the adventures of a Mandalorian bounty hunter played by Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal. The series is set to launch on the very same day as Disney+, so Star Wars fans can look forward to The Mandalorian next month.

The Captain Cassian Andor series, on the other hand, has yet to receive a release date. However, now that Gilroy is on board, we can probably expect Lucasfilm to begin production on the series soon enough.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian premieres on November 12, 2019. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
