Disney might have set a few release dates aside for a few Star Wars films on December 2022, 2023, and 2024, however, it seems like Lucasfilm's plans for the franchise are still rather uncertain after the studio releases Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this December.

Earlier this week, Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff surprised Star Wars fans when they announced their exit from their upcoming Star Wars trilogy. Variety just recently wrote a detailed article about the fallout, and according to the entertainment news article, this showrunner's exit from their Star Wars project is sending Lucasfilm back to the drawing board.

"The departure of the two [David Benioff, D.B. Weiss] likely sends the studio back to the drawing board with the future of the series more uncertain than it has been since Disney closed its $4 billion deal for Lucasfilm in 2012," the publication wrote.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to fans. Lucasfilm must have to scramble to get its timeline in order now that Benioff and Weiss have decided to leave the Star Wars franchise. After all, the December 2022 release date was supposed to go to the first installment in the duo's Star Wars trilogy.

Though this might sound discouraging, this new turn of events also gives Lucasfilm the opportunity to restructure its plans for the franchise after The Rise of Skywalker. The studio still has a few years before 2022. There's still some time for Lucasfilm to surprise fans with an announcement here or there.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
