Star Wars Makes Lightsaber-Wielding Stormtroopers Canon

Lightsabers may specifically be a weapon for Light Side Force users and Dark Side Force users, however, the Star Wars creative team has long since explored the idea of stormtroopers carrying around the laser weapon and now it looks like that might be canon.

Star Wars conceptual designer Ralph McQuarrie used to envision a version of the troopers carrying out lightsabers during the early development of the Star Wars franchise and early drafts of A New Hope showed lightsaber use more widespread than fans have to come to know it. However, George Lucas decided to limit the use of the lightsaber to make the weapons more unique, allowing only Force0users like the Jedi and the Sith to wield the sabers.

However, it seems like Star Wars has actually made lightsaber-carrying stormtrooper's a weapon – and now we don't mean the baton-wielding TR-8R from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

According to Screen Rant, Star Wars Insider actually featured a short story called "A Two-Edged Sword' which focused on the adventures of a group of six stormtroopers that turned out to be the clones of a Dark Jedi, Sa Cuis.

Trained directly by Sheyvan, one of Emperor Palpatine's Hands, these Cuis clones were made to do follow the orders of the direct commander which was to kill Darth Sidious.

The short story "A Two-Edged Sword" came with artwork done by Chris Trevas, and in it, we get to see Cuis Clones holding lightsabers much like McQuarrie's concept art.

Aside from the short story, the main Star Wars comic run also featured an undercover Imperial Sergeant called Kreel holding a green lightsaber of his own.

We wonder whether this trajectory will continue and whether we'll see Finn (John Boyega) brandishing a saber again in Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
