Star Wars Legend Mark Hamill Advises Fans On Luke Skywalker Lightsaber On Auction

Wars collectors were pretty excited when word came out that a new auction would be selling a number of props from A New Hope, especially after the announcement highlighted that Luke Skywalker's lightsaber would be one of the items up for bid. Unfortunately, it seems like the lightsaber isn't really one of those one-of-a-kind props from the set of the film.

Hearing about the auction, Star Wars legend Mark Hamill decided to post an advisory for fans on his Twitter account, warning interested bidders that A New Hope and other Star Wars' productions didn't have just one lightsaber for the franchise. Instead, Lucasfilm invested in "many, many," lightsabers, both for Hamill and for his stunt double.

"Be Advised – There was no ONE lightsaber I used in the films, but many, MANY, both for myself and my stunt double. Multiple duplicates back-up props are commonplace during production – When the handle ridges were cutting my hands, they even made a few w/ soft sponge ridges," Hamill wrote on his post, adding in a little hashtag warning #BuyerBeware.

This advisory is pretty useful for Star Wars collectors looking for one-of-a-kind items for the collection because it sheds a whole lot of light on the lightsaber used in the production of Star Wars many films. The details also help clarify the lightsaber being sold in Profiles in History's auction which describes the item as "The Original Mark Hamill ‘Luke Skywalker' lightsaber from Star Wars: A New Hope." Technically, the description might correct if the item really is a lightsaber prop original used in A New Hope, but now at least collectors know it really isn't the only lightsaber that was used in the Star Wars films.

Hamill is set to appear in Star Wars: Episode IX which premieres on December 20, 2019.
