The Star Wars franchise might be one of the most successful franchises in the Hollywood industry, however, recent shake-ups have caused industry insiders to question the future of the galaxy far, far away. Last month, fans were shocked to hear that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had decided to exit their Star Wars trilogy so that they could focus on their deal with Netflix. A week after that, Disney CEO Bob Iger reiterated the need to slow down the production of Star Wars movies.
What was going to happen to Star Wars now?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, things might begin to change for the franchise. Star Wars was always more of an ever-expanding story than a franchise. Sure, the Expanded Universe might have pushed the franchise's narrative far beyond Star Wars original storyline, however, after Disney's decision to remove the EU from canon, everything returned to the Skywalker saga. All of the films and series in Star Wars existed to support the Skywalker storyline.
However, now that the Skywalker saga is coming to an end with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Hollywood Reporter expects the franchise to morph into something more like Marvel. Not only is Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige set to produce his own Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, but the debut of Star Wars: The Mandalorian also marks something new for the galaxy far, far away. Unlike Lucasfilm's movie releases, the upcoming series produced by Jon Favreau doesn't feature any sort of narrative connection to the Skywalker saga. This independence is something that the entertainment news outlet likens to a Marvel Studios project – the site predicts that Star Wars may turn into Marvel as time passes along.
