Star Wars: Episode IX’s Mark Hamill Opens Up About Luke Skywalker’s Return

Star Wars fans were pretty surprised when Lucasfilm announced that Mark Hamill would be reprising his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode IX. The Jedi Master had sacrificed himself for the sake of the Resistance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, so how in the world would he be able to return for the sequel trilogy installment's third and final chapter?

Though Star Wars fans speculate that Luke might very well appear as a Force Ghost in Episode IX, it's still all up in the air without any official confirmation from Lucasfilm.

Speaking in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on the late night show Jimmy Kimmel Live, Hamill unwittingly got into the topic of Episode IX while discussing his new show, Knightfall.

"They glued the [Knightfall] beard on over my own beard," Hamill said, noting his facial hair in the series. However, the Star Wars legend couldn't help but tease, "I had to keep the beard for something else (though)."

When asked by Kimmel what exactly he was referring to, the actor gave a theatrical wink.

"Well it's NDA; that's non-disclosure agreement! Don't quote me," Hamill teased.

Right now, Hamill doesn't have any other projects close to Knightfall other than Episode IX, so it's likely that the Star Wars legend was referring to the upcoming film. Right now there's a lot riding on the newest Star Wars entry. Not only is Episode IX set as the final chapter in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy, but it's also expected to put an end to the Skywalker Saga.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
