Star Wars: Episode IX May Include Another Major Cameo

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's very first teaser trailer might have promised the return of Emperor Palpatine, however, there's a lot of speculation that the film may very well include the appearance of another major Star Wars character – Anakin Skywalker.

While most fans believe that the title for Star Wars: Episode IX refers to the return of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), a post on Reddit suggests that the name actually points to the Jedi Master's father, Anakin. The past two Star Wars trilogies have featured Anakin in one form or another, and according to this new theory, Anakin is going to return again to complete "his story arc by fulfilling the Chosen One's prophecy and actually bringing balance to the force."

Sure, Darth Vader might have died after battling with Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, but the heavy-breathing Sith Lord converted to the Light Side just before his moment of passing. Because he had turned to the light, fans believe that Anakin could make an appearance in The Rise of Skywalker as a Force Ghost, the same way that Luke is supposed to in the film.

While this might sound like a bit of a stretch, we've felt Vader's presence in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy. Vader had such a major influence on Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), it only feels right that J.J. Abrams brings Anakin back as a Force Ghost in Episode IX.

Let's just cross our fingers, and wait and see.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
