Star Wars: Episode IX Kiss Features LGBTQ Resistance Members

Romance might not be the main focus in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but a few fans are hoping for a few sparks here and there in the highly-anticipated Star Wars movie, especially between the sequel trilogy leads, Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

Earlier this week, word came out that fans would get to see a surprising kiss in The Rise of Skywalker. Though fans were hoping that it would be an intimate moment shared either between Rey and Kylo Ren or between Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac), the leak revealed that the romantic scene would be between characters of little importance in the movie.

Now, The Den of Nerdsadds to the leak, revealing that the kiss would actually be shared between two random female Resistance fighters. If proven true, then Episode IX is going to further push the campaign for diversity and representation in cinema by featuring members of the LGBTQ – though it seems like these characters don't have a major role to play in the upcoming Star Wars entry. Lucasfilm could have sent a much stronger message by revealing a few members of the core cast as members of the LGBTQ, but perhaps the studio is trying to avoid dealing with the backlash from more traditional fans of the franchise.

Of course, fans can still expect Episode IX to focus on the connection between Rey and Kylo Ren, though we can't be sure how romantic the two are going to get in the movie. At least Ridley says that the film's going to "deal" with the pairing. Let's wait and see what happens.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
