Star Wars’ Domhnall Gleeson Slams Fans Against The Last Jedi’s Female Lead And Diversity

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have been a huge commercial and critical success for Lucasfilm, however, there were Star Wars fans who didn't quite enjoy the film for a number of reasons, including the fact that The Force Awakens sequel openly subverted fan expectations. Unfortunately, while some had valid criticisms of how The Last Jedi played out, others simply didn't enjoy the film because of the number of female characters and characters of color.

Now, speaking in an interview with The Times (via ComicBook.com), Star Wars sequel trilogy star Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), lashes back at those who've been bashing The Last Jedi because of the effort it's made for diversity and representation.

"Having a problem with a female lead or a diverse cast? That doesn't even cross my mind as being an issue, because if that's a problem for you, then your opinion doesn't matter to me. If you've paid the money, you've bought the right to an opinion," the British actor said."But, also, movies have to change."

Times have changed as well. There's been a stronger call for progressiveness in the Hollywood industry, and the success of films like the DC Extended Universe's Wonder Woman and Marvel's Black Panther have both served as shining examples that audiences have been searching for more diversity and representation in media.

Now, with Star Wars: Episode IX on the way, some wonder whether Star Wars will continue its progressive trajectory, or whether the backlash against The Last Jedi will affect the third sequel trilogy installment. According to Gleeson, criticism against The Last Jedi won't be changing Episode IX.

"Well, this is where my eagerness not to cause waves probably perks up, but I've not been aware of any corrective measures," Gleeson said. "It just feels like the third part of a trilogy."

Honestly, there's nothing wrong with Star Wars taking steps towards better representation in their film.

What do you think? Should Episode IX change because of how fans feel towards The Last Jedi?
