Star Wars Director Teams Up With Ava DuVernay To Develop New Amazon Science Fiction Series

Selma and A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay is now working together with Star Wars director Victoria Mahoney to develop a brand new science fiction project for Amazon.

According to a report by Variety, Amazon has just announced its plans to develop a live-action adaptation of Octavia Butler's critically-acclaimed science fiction novel, Dawn. The streaming site has tapped Victoria Mahoney, the first woman to partly direct a Star Wars film (namely Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ) to work on the new project. Mahoney will be teaming up together with DuVerney and the filmmaker's production outfit, Array Teamworks.

Published way back in 1987, the book Dawn was the first in a three-part series titled Lilith's Brood. The book tells the story of a black woman who ends up working together with aliens to restore humanity after a nuclear war. The second and third books in the series are called Adulthood Rites and Imago, books published in 1988 and in 1989. These books in Lilith's Brood tries to explore heavy themes like sexuality, gender, and of course, race.

Mahoney is slated to direct the pilot and to write the series. While her name may seem relatively fresh, the filmmaker has had a lot of experience, partly directing The Rise of Skywalker and episodes of shows like Greys Anatomy, Claws, Power, American Crime, You, and I am the Night. Mahoney previously worked with DuVarney in the series Queen Sugar. DuVerney is set to executive produce the Dawn alongside other EPs.

Amazon has yet to announce a release date for Dawn but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
