Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Would Have Cast Tobey Maguire As Older Peter Parker

Miles Morales might be the star of Sony Picture's animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, but the movie also has a dozen other Spider-Man iterations, including an older version of Peter Parker. While Peter is currently being voiced by Jurassic World star Jake Johnson, the studio once considered casting the original star of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, Tobey Maguire, for the role.

Into the Spider-verse's directors Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, and Bob Persichetti all recently went on an interview with Screen Crush, and during their discussion with the publication, the directorial team revealed that they initially thought of having Maguire come on board as the voice of the film's older Peter Parker.

Unfortunately, the trio decided against inviting Maguire, saying that fans would have confused the film for another live-action addition to Raimi's trilogy.

"There was. There were many thoughts about where we could put Tobey Maguire and others," Rothman explained during the interview with the news outlet. " I think after this film, those thoughts might have a little more traction. But before this movie, and introducing the idea of the Spider-Verse to the audience, I think everybody was afraid that it would just really confuse people. But wow, it would have been fun."

In a way, the directors were right in saying that fans would have gotten confused by Maguire's involvement in Into the Spider-Verse, though honestly, it would have been really fun to have the original Spidey doing some voice work for the movie. After all, Maguire is Sony's first Spider-Man. Sure, a lot of actors came after Maguire. Andrew Garfield played everyone's favorite web-slinger in The Amazing Spider-Man, and Tom Holland took on the role for Marvel, debuting in Captain America: Civil War and making a mark in his standalone film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. Still, there's something romantic about being the first to actually make a mark.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse comes swinging into cinemas December 14, 2018.
