Silver & Black Director Reveals that Sony is Still Deliberating Spider-Man Appearance in SUMC

Ever since Sony released Venom, Marvel fans have been hoping to see Tom Holland's Peter Parker make surprise appearances in Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters, the studio's shared comic book universe. After all, what kind of film universe focused on Spider-Man supporting characters would SUMC be without an appearance from Spider-Man himself?

Unfortunately, it seems like Sony is still unsure about having Peter Parker in SUMC's upcoming movies.

Director Gina Price-Bythewood just recently spoke in an interview with Total Film (via Games Radar) to talk about Silver&Black, and while the filmmaker couldn't offer any major status update about her upcoming SUMC movie, she did provide a few interesting reveals.

That includes Sony's decision to have Spider-Man in its shared comic book universe. According to the filmmaker, there's been a lot of talk about Spider-Man in the SUMC.

"My honest answer is I don't know. I really love those characters, I loved having them together. I thought, what we came up with was a really good, really organic way to have the two together. That world is changing so much because of the success of the Spider-Man films," Bythewood told the entertainment news outlet.

"There's a question of, 'Can you really have these films with Spider-Man, not in them? Should he at least have some sort of part in them?' That's always the question. I've taken two years off of that for [The Old Guard] so once this gets out into the world, I hope it's a success, and then I'll certainly go back and start talking with them again," the director continued.

Based on Bythewood's comments, it seems like Sony is carefully trying to think over whether or not they should have Holland crossover to the SUMC. The studio must still be deliberating what an appearance from Holland would mean for their comic book franchise. Would Spider-Man's appearance in SUMC link the franchise to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Does Sony want that? Would it improve ticket sales for their films?

It isn't an easy decision to make, of course, which is why Sony is taking time in deliberating. Let's wait and see what happens next.

Venom 2 is set for release on June 25, 2021.
