Shazam! 2 Director Says The Movie Might See Delay

The sequel to Shazam! might not be due till 2022, but it looks like the film may see delay because of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

Yesterday, Shazam! 2 director David Sandberg held a "quarantine watch party" on Twitter showcasing the movie that brought Zachary Levi's Captain Marvel to the DC Extended Universe. Not only did the watch party feature cool footage from Shazam!, it also included some notes from Sandberg about the highly anticipated sequel.

These notes included some alarming news – Sandberg isn't quite sure whether or not Shazam! 2 is going to premiere on time.

Sure, the follow-up to Shazam! might not be set for release till 2022, however, the production of the film may be affected by the delays caused by the spread of COVID-19.

"Well, we'll see how long this goes, because I mean, we were going to start shooting this year. But, I mean, who knows how long this will go on? I mean, it feels like every movie gets delayed now, so we'll see what happens with Shazam!" Sandberg told fans during the watch party. "But so far, I've been working on the script. We can still do that, so that's being done and then, yeah, we'll just see in a couple of months how it looks, you know?"

COVID-19 has had quite an impact on the entertainment industry. Not only has it cancelled major events like SXSW and the 2020 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) but it has also forced film studios to shut down the production of highly anticipated film and television series including Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as well as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

It's even forced the delay of movies like Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow, No Time to Die, New Mutants, and Mulan.

We can only hope that the pandemic comes to an end soon.

Shazam 2! is set for release on April 1, 2022.
