Scarlet Witch Was Thanos’ Biggest Threat In Avengers: Endgame Battle

After seeing her lover killed and then turned into dust in Avengers: Infinity War, Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) returned with a vengeance in the film's sequel, Avengers: Endgame.

Using her powers in the film, Scarlet Witch was close to killing off the Mad Titan, so much so that Thanos (Josh Brolin) had to "cheat" so that he could get out of harms way.

Marvel just recently released Avengers: Endgame on Digital HD, and thanks to that fans have access to the movie's commentary where directors Joe and Anthony Russo together with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, reveal a few of the secrets of the movie. During the big climactic scene where the Avengers battle full force against Thanos and his army, the creators comment on Scarlet Witch's play against the Mad Titan.

"She's really the biggest threat to Thanos on this field," McFeely explains in the commentary.

"She is a very powerful character, and he has to in a way, cheat, and sacrifice his own armies, just to escape her," Joe Russo says, "Wanda's powers have a lot to do with her internal life. And there's a growth to the powers and on the growth of her internal life and her ability to harness them, and the emotion and pain caused by Vision's death has caused an acceleration of that growth."

In Marvel comics, Wanda is one hell of a pretty powerful sorceress, however, her powers were limited when she was brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her origin was also tweaked. When she was brought into the franchise, she was no longer a mutant, and no longer the daughter of Magneto.

However, it seems like Marvel may be retconning a bit of Wanda's origin, preparing her for a House of M arc in the WandaVision series on Disney+.

Avengers: Endgame is now available on Digital HD.
