In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Sam Witwer gives life to the voice of one of a fan-favorite character that's been around since the prequel trilogy Maul. He also did the voice of the former Sith Lord in Star Wars Rebels, the Star Wars animated series that followed after Clone Wars came to an end on Disney.
Witwer definitely has a whole lot of experience voicing the Dathomirian Zabrak, however, according to the voice actor, he never really believed that he'd be able to become Maul in any of the Star Wars films. However, to his surprise, Witwer was tapped by Lucasfilm to help give the voice to Maul in his surprise appearance in the Star Wars spinoff, Solo: A Star Wars Story
Speaking in an interview with ComicBook.com, Witwer revealed the reaction the time he learned that he'd be voicing Mal for the big screen.
"Shock and disbelief," Witwer told the publication during the interview. "I have had fans come up to me over the years and they say things like, 'Hey, do you think Maul will ever be in a movie and you'll voice him?' I would just say, 'That's adorable. That's so sweet. No, of course not. That's never going to happen, but so cute that you think that that would ever happen.' Or they'd say things like, 'Do you think they'll ever make The Clone Wars again?' I'd be like, 'Shh, you're okay. Go to sleep.' I would have this slightly, I hate to say it but, a condescending thought of, 'I know how the business works, and the fans don't, but they have enthusiasm. It's wonderful that they have this enthusiasm.'"
Star Wars fans also felt a lot of shock and disbelief when they saw Maul in Solo. No one expected the former Sith Lord to make an appearance in Solo – the Zabrak had very little to do with the origin of everyone's favorite smuggler, Solo. Still, the cameo was a pleasant surprise, and now fans wonder whether Maul could get another Star Wars film in the future. Perhaps Solo 2.
