Ron Howard Says George Lucas Enjoys Star Wars Movies that Expand and Experiment

Most Star Wars fans might look for the feel of the original Star Wars films in all of the newer entries in the Star Wars franchise, but the creator of the galaxy far, far away is interested in seeing different filmmakers expanding and experimenting with the franchise.

Speaking in an interview with Collider,Solo: A Star Wars Story director Ron Howard opened up about the conversation he had with George Lucas when he decided to helm Lucasfilm's Star Wars spinoff after the studio decided to part ways with The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

According to Howard, while Lucas understands that Star Wars stories should in part cater to fans, the filmmaker is eager to see storytellers pushing the franchise into unexpected directions.

"He's all for the galaxy expanding and experimenting," Howard explained during the interview with the entertainment news outlet, "That's what he prefers the most. He gets most excited about those that want to push the boundaries of a Star Wars movie or a TV show. And he always contemplated TV shows, he did animated [series], so I was sort of prepared for it."

This shouldn't come as a surprise to fans. Lucas himself was constantly experimenting with the franchise. The filmmaker was eager to work with new technology to tell the prequel trilogy's story, and he would often make changes to the film's that he'd already made.

When asked what he thought of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a film that pushed the franchise to new directions, Lucas said that the movie was "beautifully made."

We can only wonder what kind of films Lucas might have made had he been allowed to work on Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is currently screening in cinemas.
