Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy Reportedly Terminated By Lucasfilm

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have been a commercial and critical success, however, Rian Johnson's first entry in the Star Wars franchise easily became one of the most divisive Star Wars movies with fans complaining about how the film supposedly subverted expectations and how it allegedly misused legacy characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

Now, as fans wait for Lucasfilm to begin the marketing push for The Last Jedi's sequel, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, a new rumor on Twitter claims that Johnson's new Star Wars trilogy may have actually been axed by Lucasfilm.

Posting on the social media site, iFixTrailers put up a "breaking news" post claiming that Johnson is no longer going to direct any Star Wars film.

"The decision has been discussed for some time since February 2018. Johnson hasn't been notified yet due to Lucasfilm restructuring," the post explains.

According to the Twitter user, sources at Disney have said that Johnson's planned trilogy was supposed to begin pre-production back in 2018. However, the backlash from The Last Jedi and the connection to Solo: A Star Wars Story's flop has put a negative light on the director, creating doubts from Lucasfilm and Bob Iger.

This might seem like a bit of a stretch. While iFixTrailers points out that Johnson's trilogy hasn't had any casting or script, Disney has said that it would like to take some time off the Star Wars franchise after the release of Episode IX. Besides, the filmmaker has been very vocal about his return to the Star Wars franchise – unless that's a lie of course.

Let's cross our fingers and wait to hear from Lucasfilm.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
