Rian Johnson Comments On New Star Wars Trilogy

Disney announced a new Star Wars trilogy today, unveiling its plans for the franchise after Lucasfilm finishes its sequel trilogy in 2020.

The studio took fans by surprise, announcing the new trilogy out of the blue, saying that it had tapped Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was its new architect.

Taking to Twitter, Johnson decided to talk about his new assignment as the key builder of Lucasfilm's next set of Star Wars films, joking about how he REALLY hopes that fans are going to like his sequel to The Force Awakens now that he's been given the task of overseeing the franchise's future direction.

It's a pretty funny tweet. There's been so much excitement building up over The Last Jedi, a Star Wars installment which Lucasfilm describes as a fresh take on the galaxy far, far away.

Despite all of its directorial shakeups this year, Lucasfilm's been pretty happy with Johnson, heaping praise on the filmmaker.

"We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi," said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He's a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

This really puts a lot of expectation on The Last Jedi. Let's hope that it's as good as everyone expects.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres December 25, 2017.
