Red Dead Redemption 2 Just Outsold Its Original Game In 8 Days' Time

Rockstar Games might have taken eight years or so to develop Red Dead Redemption 2, but it looks like the action adventure game just managed to outsell the lifetime sales of the original video game after eight days of its release.

According to a report by Variety,Red Dead Redemption 2 sold more than 17 million units around the globe this Wednesday, beating out the sales of the first Red Dead Redemption video game in the span of a little over a week. The game's predecessor, a follow-up to the 2004 Red Dead Revolver, sold only about 15 million units worldwide ever since its first release in 2010.

Raking in more than $725 million during its first three days on the market, Red Dead Redemption 2 has become the highest-rated video game of the year on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Of course, it wasn't easy working on Red Dead Redemption 2. The game took quite a while to produce with a staff of nearly 2,000 working on the game for nearly eight years.

"We are really proud of Rockstar Games," Take-Two Interactive Chairman Strauss Zelnick told the publication in an interview. "More than 2,000 people brought ‘Red Dead Redemption 2' to the audience and delivered this incredible result. It's a great place to work and home to some of the most talented people in the industry. I stand behind the label and its approach."

Right now, it's still pretty unclear whether Red Dead Redemption 2 will manage to beat Grand Theft Auto V's massive 95 million unit sale, but the game definitely has the advantage of a strong start.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is now available on PlayStation 4 and on Xbox One.
