Parasite Director Bong Joon-Ho Doesn’t Want To Direct Marvel Movies

Pop culture fans might want to see Bong Joon-Ho tackle major franchises like Marvel and Star Wars after the overwhelming success of his South Korean black comedy movie Parasite, however, it seems like the Korean director has no interest in taking on franchises like those from Marvel.

Bong Joon-Ho just recently made an appearance on Variety's The Big Ticketpodcast to discuss various things like Parasite and the 92nd Academy Awards this year. During the discussion with the entertainment news outlet, the filmmaker was asked whether he'd ever direct a comic book movie for Marvel.

Then and there, Joon-Ho made it clear that he doesn't really think he'd be a good fit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying that his style doesn't really fit in well with what Marvel is looking for in its filmmakers.

"I don't think Marvel would ever want a director like me," Bong said. "I don't expect any offers from them anytime soon. Of their movies, I did enjoy the films by James Gunn and James Mangold's Logan, and I think there are great directors who can handle great projects like that. The film industry seems complicated, but I think it's quite simple for directors. It's just best to do what you're good at. And so I don't really think Marvel and I are suitable for each other. That's something I just intuitively feel."

According to Joon-Ho, he usually takes on smaller and more intimate films like Parasite. These movies allow the filmmaker to focus on various details, allowing him to enhance the narrative that he wants to tell the audience.

Joon-Ho likes movies that allow him a "very meticulous and focused approach," and the filmmaker believes that major franchises like Marvel won't allow him that kind of privilege.

Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins when Black Widow premieres on May 1, 2020.
