Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Reportedly Had A Story Too Similar To Star Wars: The Mandalorian

There was a lot of alarm today when word broke out that Lucasfilm was delaying the production of its Obi-Wan Kenobi live-action series. There were reports saying that the project would be delayed indefinitely. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy reportedly didn't approve of the scripts for the project, and so the studio decided to put a hold on Obi-Wan until the scripts could be rewritten.

Now, new reports say that one of the main reasons why Obi-Wan was delayed because the story for the series was way too similar with Star Wars: The Mandalorian.

The Hollywood Reporter has a brand new scoop on the Obi-Wan news cycle, and according to the entertainment news outlet, one of the main reasons behind the delay was because the narrative for Obi-Wan was too similar to Jon Favreau's hit live-action series.

Apparently, the scripts for Obi-Wan had Kenobi acting as the protector of a young Luke and potentially a young Leia. Lucasfilm felt like the premise was way too similar with The Mandalorian where the titular character played by Pedro Pascal watched over Baby Yoda, otherwise known as The Child.

Lucasfilm originally hired Hossein Amini to write the scripts for Obi-Wan, however, it seems like Disney is reportedly on the prowl for new writers for the series.

While this report has yet to be confirmed by Lucasfilm, we understand why the studio would opt to delay Obi-Wan in the face of script rewrites. It would be terrible for Lucasfilm to redo a series that's already been done.

Lucasfilm's latest release, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, is currently screening in cinemas.
