New Mutants Director Reveals Storm’s Original Role in Movie

The New mutants might focus on a group of young mutant heroes like Wolfsbane, Magik, and Canonball, however, the highly-anticipated horror movie was also supposed to include Alexandra Shipp's version of Ororo Munroe, one of the original X-Men

Now, The New Mutants director Josh Boone has revealed the role that Shipp was supposed to play in the film before changes were made to the movie.

Speaking in an interview with Slash Film, the director says that his original plan for The New Mutants was to have the movie take place in 1980s. The timeline of the film would have intersected with the timeline of Bryan Singer's 2016 X-Men movie, Apocalypse, a movie that included Shipp's iteration of Storm.

Unfortunately, when the film failed to earn as much as Fox wanted, Boone had to change the setting to the present age. The director ultimately decided on writing Storm off the film.

"We had early drafts that were supposed to be in the same timeline as Apocalypse, so it was originally going to be set in the '80s. Originally, Professor X and Storm were in it, and Storm very much played the Alice Braga role," the director told the entertainment news outlet, "Over the course of months, a new studio head came in, they said they didn't want any X-Men movies to take place in the past anymore, as if that was the reason that Apocalypse was bad."

Based on the trailers for the film, Braga is set out for a pivotal role in The New Mutants. That means that Storm would have had an important part to play in the film. While it's a shame that we won't get to see Ororo Munroe in the movie, we definitely can't wait to see how the story plays out, with or without Storm.

The New Mutants is set to premiere on August 28, 2020.
