Netizens Calling For Disney Fans To Boycott Mulan After Lead Star Sides With HK Police

It looks like Disney's live-action remake of Mulan is facing a bit of controversy again, this time because of the project's lead star, Liu Yifei.

While some fans have been expressing disappointment over the remake's lack of musical numbers and the changes that it's made to the original animated classic, this new controversy is much heavier than the first few complaints about the project. Netizens are now calling for fans to boycott Mulan after lead star Liu Yifei shared a political post supporting the Hong Kong police in the current protests over the government's proposed extradition bill with China.

The actress just recently went on the microblogging site Weibo to show her support for the police, and the masses have not been taking it well.

For those who haven't been keeping up with global news, major protests have stormed Hong Kong for the past few months because of a proposed extradition bill that would send alleged criminals to stand trial in China.

The bill might seem harmless at first glance, but the bill would allow China to extradite anyone it considers a criminal, including activists looking for political asylum in Hong Kong. There are major concerns that if the bill were to pass, then Chinese courts would be able to rule with bias.

While Liu is free to express whatever opinion she holds, this controversy may very well hurt Disney's Mulan remake. The call to #BoycottMulan may gain traction over time, giving the film a bad name when it releases.

What do you think of the #BoycottMulan movement? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Mulan is scheduled to premiere on March 27, 2020.
